Norfolk and Western – “N&W R’y Co.”- Cast Brass Fancy Back Lock

Here we have a very nice brass heart lock cast “N&W R’y Co.” on the back in fancy script. The lock is in good working condition, and largely free of the big dings and gouges often seen on the edges of these old locks. There’s good spring in the dust cover, too, and the lock has a rich dark patina, as well as some old railroad grime that you may, or may not, want to clean off. The dust cover does have a slight upturn when viewed from the side and the shackle is thin in a couple places as well.

There is no date or manufacturer’s mark on the shackle. The shackle has a tall profile, and advanced N&W collectors say that the lack of a manufacturer’s hallmark means the lock was likely made by the N&W itself at the East Roanoke shops sometime after around 1955. Sometimes these locks are undated, but it’s also possible that the date was worn away. Overall, this is a very nice specimen, an excellent addition to any N&W collection, and a solid entry point into cast brass switch locks.
