RailroadTreasures offers the following item:  North America by Rail By Inez and David Morris A Traveler’s Guide 1977 Soft Co  North America by Rail By Inez and David Morris A Travelers Guide  1977  Soft Cover 227 pagesIntroductionNorth America by Rail was an interesting book to write. We learned many important things we hadn’t known before about passenger trains. For instance, of all modes of transportation they are the safest, they do the least damage to our ecology, and they are the most economical in their use of fuel.It was an exciting book, too. During the year we were researching and writing it, we watched the rebirth of the passenger trains in the United States through the development of Amtrak. We started our research trips riding on rebuilt twenty-year-old trains, but by the time we began to write about our experiences, new Amfleet cars and turbo trains were rolling off the assembly lines and onto Amtrak rails. Most of all, it was a fun book to do. We both thoroughly enjoyed our train trips, which we share with you in Part Two. We include a lot of practical information we picked up along the way for making train travel easy, but perhaps the most important point we make in telling you about our experiences is that a train is totally different from a plane or a bus. It’s sort of a combination sightseeing vehicle and hotel on wheels, as well as a safe, efficient means of transportation that keeps going even in the worst weather. For the utmost enjoyment, you must get out of your assigned seat or compartment, use all of the train’s facilities, and make friends with your fellow passengers.
