Original 1916 Blueprint Redondo Beach Pier (Pacific Electric Railway Company)Click images to enlargeDescription(Pacific Electric Railway Company)  Original blueprint for the new Redondo Beach, California pier, February 21, 1916, about 16 by 21 inches, in near excellent condition (there is a small loss of paper in the upper left corner and the blueprint has been folded for storage).  The first Redondo Beach pier was constructed in 1889 to handle the lumber trade from the pacific northwest.  Two additional wharves were constructed in 1895 and 1903.  A storm at the end of April 1915 caused tremendous damage to the second pier as well as recreational beach buildings and their contents across from the pier.  Erected in 1916, the V-shaped concrete and steel “Endless Pier” (Wharf #2) was built as a municipal pleasure pier with railroad tracks on one prong and the other for fishermen and tourists.  The Pacific Electric Railway Company, which monopolized streetcar transportation in Southern California, had established elaborate stations and terminals to bring tourists to the Redondo Beach since the end of the 19th century and was involved in the reconstruction of the damaged pier and surroundings following the 1915 storm.  The company had lost all of its tracks and stations on the first pier as well as many railway cars.

As seen in the blueprint, across from the pier were a number of attractions including the Moonstone Building, which was an indoor amusement center, a large dancing pavilion, a gambling casino, a pump station to drain the street when flooded, and a bath house.  All of these structures suffered extensive damages during the 1915 flood.  A major part of the reconstruction was the breakwater that dominates the center of the blueprint and was intended to prevent similar damages from being repeated.

No matter the intent, man often loses its attempts to control nature.  The Endless/Pleasure Pie was damaged by a storm in 1919, and it was condemned for safety reasons in 1928.Condition:UsedCondition Notes:In near excellent condition (there is a small loss of paper in the upper left corner and the blueprint has been folded for storage).PaymentPaypal
