An original photograph signed by noted Chicago railroad executive (and Machias, Maine native son) Henry Homes Porter (American, 1835-1910).
Signed below the image, “Yours Truly / H. H. Porter”
Photograph is mounted to backing board and measures 9-3/4 x 8 inches; in period wood frame measuring 16 x 14 inches.
Photograph is dated in the image upper left “1901” with photographer’s name (Fettaris?).
Very good condition with age toning and minor spotting to mount. Biography:
Henry Homes Porter (American, 1835 1910). Railroad executive. Chairman of the board of the Chicago & Eastern Illinois, Director of the Union Pacific and numerous other railroads. H. H. Porter was born in Machias, Me., December 7, 1835, the son of Rufus King Porter, a respected lawyer in town, and Lucy Lee (Hedge) Porter. The Porter Memorial Library in Machias was built with donated funds by Henry and named in both his and his father’s honor.
Of historical note, the mantel of the fireplace in the Reading Room is made from a slab of rare black granite, quarried in Addison, Maine. The first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought nearby, and the ballast stones from the captured British warship Margaretta are also incorporated in the base of this fireplace.
