While the east end of the Allegheny Division followed the Juniata River valley through rolling hills, its western end was quite different. This was a mountain railroad, complete with all the facilities necessary to enable heavy freight trains to climb up and over the mountain range that gave the division its name. While the Allegheny Division lacked large cities with imposing station facilities, it more than made up for this with a heavy-duty, superbly engineered, often spectacular railroad necessary to expedite a huge volume of freight traffic with a minimum of interference from other trains. The most striking example is, of course, the world-renowned Horseshoe Curve, PRR’s enduring manifestation of the engineering prowess of then Chief Engineer, later President, John Edgar Thomson. Simply put, Horseshoe Curve enabled the road to conquer the Allegheny Mountain barrier.Thomson’s decision to follow river valleys to reduce approach gradients and attack the Alleghenies head-on produced extensive shops, yards and engine service facilities on either side of the Alleghenies. Altoona is located at the base of the East Slope. Conemaugh just east of Johnstown is at the base of the West Slope. As the road leveled off, the main line and the Conemaugh line crossed and re-crossed the Conemaugh River, resulting in a multitude of classic stone arch bridges. And of course, we have the well-known Gallitzin and lesser-known New Portage tunnels at the summit of the mountain.?Altoona and The Mountain, Johnstown and the Packsaddle – the stations, towers and infrastructure in this most rugged portion of the PRR main line across the Alleghenies are explored. These facilities are visited in PRR, PC and Conrail days.
