THE PHOTOGRAPHER IS STANDING ABOVE THE NORTH PORTAL OF HARECASTLE SOUTH TUNNEL AND THE SOUTH PORTAL OF HARECASTLE MIDDLE TUNNEL CAN JUST BE SEEN. THE DIVERSION AROSE AS THE THREE VICTORIAN HARECASTLE RAIL TUNNELS HAD INSUFFICIENT CLEARANCE FOR THE ELECTRIC OVERHEAD CABLES BEING INSTALLED AS AN EARLY PHASE OF THE ELECTRIFICATION OF THE WEST COAST MAIN LINE AND ITS SUBSIDIARY FEEDERS.
