A postcard featuring an early view of the bridge over the LSWR main line at Wimbledon Station.
The photograph is believed to date from the late 19th Century, – possibly as long ago as the 1870s, but the postcard itself is certainly later – probably early in the inter-war years. The reverse side reveals it was published by J Russell and Sons of 19 Worple Road Wimbledon SW19. This full numeric form of the London Postal Districts was only introduced in 1917.
Amazingly, at least one of the substantial detached houses to be seen in the distance on the left of the picture still survives today, – although you have to look to find it. It lies on the west side of Wimbledon Hill Road, just north of the junction with St George’s Road. However it is mostly hidden by more modern structures which envelop the ground and first floors.
