Summary
Synopsis:Although over the years freight trains have lost their pre-eminent place on the railway in favour of passenger trains, in many respects they are of far more interest to the railway enthusiast. Not only do they work in conjunction with departmental activities over every port of the entire network, but they also hove a greater variety of lolling stock, including some locomotive classes specifically built for freight haulage.Furthermore, it was in the freqht area that the introduction of modem imported locomotives took place, initially exemplified by the Class 59 and now widespread through the Class 66s.The sectorisation phase described in this book gave the freigh activities a unique identification with their own colour schemes and embellishments. Transfers of locomotives between sectors created further interest for the enthusiast, and the photographer was able to seize irreplaceable opportunities. The book covers the 13 years between 1983 and 1996 when privatisation came into being, and describes the classes of locomotives used, showing a wide range of rolling stock at locations ranging from the North of Scotland to Cornwall.
