This would have been on a post [probably concrete] at the lineside marking the distance of 696 kms to/from Paris. It is made of cast iron at the foundry of Bouillant, Paris. It has been repainted in authentic colours [cream and green]. It originated from near Narbonne in southern France.
Apart from the bolt holes there are a couple of other holes said to be due to hunters practising, but this is more likely to be corrosion. Nevertheless there is now very little sign of rusting. Overall height 45cms and width 41cm. Potential buyer will have to factor in local collection as this is very heavy.
This is quite an unusual item ; thank you for your interest.
If anyone out there has other information eg railway company, era, dates etc I should be very pleased to hear from you.
