Here’s a Great Western Railway sheep dome block bell in good condition. The bell is brass chrome plated, and case in mahogany. At some time in its life, the upper case has been replaced. The internals show the bell solenoid coils, which test out at 8.7 ohms, ( ok). The subsidiary relay coils are not present as this must have been used on close box to box communication.
In use these were positioned in the signal box, on the block shelf above the levers, and were used to signal bell codes, ( 4 express passenger) ( 2 train entering section) etc and will have signalled hundreds of thousands of trains in its working life.
