An original LNER (London & North Eastern Series] Carriage Print issued in the late 1940s/ early 1950s for display in railway carriages. The print survived from the railway stores in the late 1960s and is NOT a reproduction.
Richmond, Yorkshire by Leonard Russell Squirrell R.W.S.
Squirrell tackled Richmond innovatively. He took himself up the hill north of the town. The result is a backlit (see the shadows nearby) silhouette view of the town and castle with the valley dropping away beyond. A housing estate has claimed much of this view in modern times. Richmond was the terminus of a relatively prosperous railway branch service from Darlington. Nearby were the patriotic delights of Catterick Garrison in one direction and the rather clearer draw of Swaledale in the other. And between, a superb market town which Alec Clifton-Taylor went on to eulogise, centred around its towering castle keep overlooking the market square one way and the river from a rocky crag the other. The painting is by the renowned East Anglian artist Leonard Squirrell RWS RE.
These prints are very collectable and are far easier to display than a railway poster (and less expensive, too!). Overall Size 20″ x 10″ (508 x 254mm), Image Size 16″ x 6″. It is in mint, unused condition and I will post, 2nd class delivery in a strong tube.
