It cuts directly acrossthe ridge-and-valley topography created by the Allegheny Mountains, rather than running parallel to them.

From an engineering point of view, the ease or difficulty of building a bridgeacross the Susquehanna depends on the location. For much of its length, theriver measures a half-mile to three-quarters of a mile wide. Some portions aredeep, but many passages around the Harrisburg,Pennsylvania’s capital city, are unusually shallow, measuring just two tothree feet deep in places.

The spot where the river pierces BlueMountain, five miles north of Harrisburg, has been the site of threerailroad bridges, all of them connecting eastern and western Pennsylvania and,at the same time, linking East Coast with Midwest.

While it was still under construction, the third and largest Rockville Bridge– the present 48-arch, stone-and-concrete structure, containing 220,000 tonsof white sandstone — was being hauled as a landmark both on the Pennsylvania Railroad and inengineering circles worldwide.

Although it has suffered damage from the elements of nature and has beenpatched and strengthened, the bridge continues to withstand the ravages offlooding and time. After serving for a century under four owners, it remains alasting monument to visionary planners, skillful builders, and generations oftravelers, shippers, and railroaders.
Book is very well illustrated throughout in black & white photographs. This book that tells the complete story of Pennsylvania’sRockville Bridge, longest concrete-and-masonry stone-arch railroad bridgein the world, on the occasion of its centennial year.

Generations of railroad fans, bridge historians, and artists have visited, photographed and illustrated this beloved landmark, which crosses theSusquehanna River on 48 arches five miles above Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

Forthis 3,820-foot-long bridge, 2002 marked the 100th year of uninterruptedservice for the Pennsylvania, PennCentral, Conrail, and NorfolkSouthern railroads.Contents:
