RailroadTreasures offers the following item:  Small Railroads 383 Shortlines Feeders By Levine, Rockey, Eby & Dale DJ  Small Railroads 383 Shortlines Feeders By Levine, Rockey, Eby & Dale with DUST JACKET 1982 Association of American Railroads   421 PagesSEE PHOTOSThis is not a book about model trains. Nor is it a book about railroads which transport families through zoos, parks, and amusement centers. On the contrary, it is a book about large corporations which collect millions of dollars annually by hauling goods for our nation’s manufacturers. It is a book about large companies who, by their own industry’s standard, are small. It is a book about small railroads in an industry of giant corporations.Found throughout the nation, small railroads are the only source of direct railroad service to a multitude of communities. In spite of their relatively large number, they have been given little attention in transportation literature. The only previous comprehensive study of small railroads was conducted in the 1930’s. Their reporting requirements to the Interstate Commerce Commission have been far less stringent than for large railroads, and since 1979, they have not been required to file any data with the Commission. Often referred to as shortlines or feeders, the 383 small railroads identified in this book tend to be unknown quantities to all but the local communities which they serve. In undertaking this study, the authors derived great satisfaction from conducting research in an area previously given little attention. Collecting fresh data, addressing key issues, and uncovering new facts are challenging tasks to researchers. A multitude of substantiated findings have been reached which should prove to be of significant value to those interested in our nation’s freight transportation system.
