Synopsis:It is now more than 30 years since the Somerset & Dorset Joint closed and some 60 years since the lines separate identity disappeared; despite this, the Somerset & Dorset remains one of the most popular of all railway operations. Jointly controlled by the Midland and London & South Western railways – later the LMS and SR – and with a locomotive stock built upon the traditions of the former, the Somerset & Dorset was one of the archetypal cross-country lines. Long stretches of single track with numerous bridges and viaducts provided an essential link in the chain of lines from the south coast to the Midlands; the lines most famous express – the Pines running from Manchester to Bournemouth – was one of the most fascinating of the steam era. As a nominally independent operation, the S&D had its own distinct identity; locomotives and coaching stock in blue livery that must have looked superb as the trains rushed through the countryside. With its concentration upon a superb collection of archive photographs covering the railways independent existence, Somerset & Dorset Joint Railway: A View from the Past is a remarkable examination of this most popular of lines.
