SouthernRegion Electrics, BW-1 12 6×4 Black+White Prints  The LBSCR commenced electric services in 1909 andthe LSWR in 1916, but it was the Southern Railway that created the worldslargest electrified suburban system from 1925 onwards. Sets were given a fourfigure number. Set 1465, at Peckham Rye on 29/06/1946, started life as a 3-SUBunit rebuilt from ex SECR stock in 1925-26 for the Eastern section. These setswere all strengthened to 4-SUB by 1949. Set 1791, at Tattenham Corner on30/06/1946 was one of ten sets converted in 1931 from LSWR steam stock to 3-SUBand modified to 4-SUB by 1949. Set 1810 was one of four 2-WIM sets rebuilt in1929 from former LBSCR overhead AC electric stock for the Wimbledon-Croydonservices, and is at Wimbledon on 24/08/1949. 1875, on the left, is a 2-NOL unitconverted ex LSWR stock in 1934/36 and is at Waterloo on 17/07/1948. 4527 onthe right is a 4-SUB from ex LSWR stock. 2008, at Pevensey & Westham on15/07/1967 is an early non-standard 2-BIL of 1935 (2001-2010). 3075, enteringHorsham on 23/04/1948 is a 4-BUF set completed for the Portsmouth services in1938. 3144 is a 4-COR unit built in 1937/38 and is at Mitcham Jcn on 7/07/1938.4169 entering Clapham Jcn on 23/08/1947, is a 4-SUB composed of ex-LSWR stock.4338, at Waterloo on 23/08/1947, is a 3-SUB from LSWR stock which had beenstrengthened to 4-SUB in 1945/46. Set 4404 was one of five 4-SUB sets assembledin 1946/48 from LSWR/SECR stock and is entering Fulwell Station on 9/07/1949.Set 4459 is another 4-SUB from ex LSWR/SECR stock and is at Strawberry Hill on31/07/1949. Coach 9803, at Strawberry Hill on 16/06/1951 completes thisevocative selection of Southern Electric stock. express in the late fifties, whilst a rebuiltMerchant Navy, No 35013 BLUE FUNNEL, blows off at the head of a Plymouthexpress. The motorman of 3-SUB set 1705 looks back for the start signalfrom Leatherhead station on 17/05/1948. 1702-1716 were 1929-30 conversions fromLBSCR block train sets. 1810 is one of the four 2-WIM sets converted from LBSCRoverhead electric stock in 1929 for the Wimbledon-Croydon services, and is inthe bay platform at West Croydon. Note the unusual girder truss below thebodies of the former Brighton stock. 2-NOL set 1823 comprised former LSWR steamstock converted in 1934-36 and is at Seaford on 14/05/1951. 2-BIL unit 2151 wasbuilt in 1938 and is seen at Virginia Water the following year. 4-SUB unit 4111is of Bulleid 1946 stock and is at Clapham Junction on 25/08/1947. When new thisstock had SOUTHERN lettering above the front windows. Set 4228, which ispassing the LSWR signal cabin at Mortlake on 14/05/1950 was LSWR stock that hadbeen strengthened from 3-SUB to 4-SUB  in1942-48. 4338, at Surbiton on a race special on 17/05/1948, was another 3-SUBthat had been beefed up to 4-SUB in 1945/46. 4-SUB set 4375, at Strawberry Hillon 14/05/1950 is Bulleid stock of 1947, but with the birth of BR, has lost theSOUTHERN lettering on the front,. Set 7048, at Eastbourne on 18/07/1967 is a1965/66 4-BIG (for Buffet car) set to BR Mk 1 body standards.9 compartment coach8948, seen at Hayes on 5/11/1948, takes us to the dawn of LSWR electrification,as it began life as part of trailer set T24 for the initial LSWR electricservices. It became part of SR trailer set 1024. CC2, now with BRITISH RAILWAYSlettering on the side, was one of the two SR/English Electric Co-Co electriclocos built by Bulleid for the SR for freight work, and is heading throughHorsham on 23/04/1948.
