Vol.41 Southern Steam Finale No.2 This second volume in our Southern Steam Finale series looks at the events on the Southern Region in March and the beginning of April 1966. There was still some variety of steam power to be seen at this time, in fact 17 different BR and Southern classes feature in this DVD. The general scene on the Waterloo to Weymouth main line and its workings are covered in some detail. These events are punctuated by three railtours during the period. There was the “New Forester” from Eastleigh to Gosport, Fawley and Lymington, with U, 01 and USA tanks. There was the visit of A4 pacific “Kingfisher” for a whole weekend for runs to Weymouth and Exeter. The “Wilts and Hants’ utilised U and N Class moguls and the last run with a Bulleid 01 Class, 33006 from Salisbury. The tours were filmed by tour participants and extensive lineside coverage. The many main line trains are seen at locations such as Waterloo, Clapham, West Byfleet, Basingstoke, Eastleigh, Southampton and Bournemouth, and lineside in between. Steam in Kent is seen by way of the steam outpost at Ashford wagon works where a C Class 0-6-0 still worked alongside two Departmental USA tanks; others are seen at Southampton Docks. This is the continuing story of the end of Southern steam in great detail as witnessed by twelve cameramen to give the best overall coverage of events. This video is pure archive, filmed in colour and authentically sound tracked. There is an informative commentary.
