An interesting history of steam railways including the fight for the broad gauge and parallel rival routes.
Mr Nock discusses such items as the Fight For The Broad Gauge and how the intransigence of railway shareholders, rather than proud and obstinate managements, caused the building of parallel rival routes.
He recalls outstanding points in the history of great locomotive centres, such as Crewe and Gateshead; the testing of locomotives and developments in signalling and automatic train control.
There is also a chapter on Beautiful Carriages and another on Royal Trains
