The Spirit of Steam, hard cover book offering insightful commentary about the significance of railroads in the 20th Century and perspective on their role in history. This edition was published in 2001 and authored by William Withuhn. The author is (was) the Curator of Transportation at the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution The book contains about 146 pages and is filled with outstanding black & white photographs of the steam locomotives that operated on North American railroads. Many of these photographs are new to me.
