HISTORIC PICTURES GALLERY.
I AM OFFERING HERE A FINE HISTORIC HARDBACK PRINT FROM THE GALLERY.
HISTORY OF RAILWAYS
ABOUT THIS PRINT
Interior of Upper Warlingham signal box showing “Lock and Block” instruments. Hanging on the front of the shelf, attached to a wooden ball, is the key release for the latter instruments. This form of signalling was very safe, because once a train was signalled on the instrument, that train had to pass the home signal before the signal at the box behind could be lowered for the following train to leave. However, if the signalled train was unable to come as planned (it may have broken down) the key was used to unlock the instrument, thus allowing the signal in rear to be lowered again for the next train to approach. This key, essential as it was to the working, was the weak link in an otherwise foolproof system and its misuse had caused accidents. However deliberate misuse apart, “Lock and Block” was for a hundred years the safest form of traditional signalling.
