Vintage Bronze Brass 12 inch Locomotive Train Bell
Up for a sale is a large solid brass pneumatic bell for a train locomotive. Because it is smooth cast and has no markings, we believe it is from the 1930’s – 1950’s era of railroading, and probably produced by EMD. It has an appealing traditional shape, and a relatively sharp shoulder.
The bell has a 12 inch diameter mouth, and an overall height of approximately 11 inches, including the stem which is about 2 inches tall. The stem has a 7/8 inch hole drilled through its axis to accommodate a ringer.
The bell and ringer were both painted red at some point. The red paint is in fair condition, but is scratched and scuffed in places, as you can see in the photos. The bell is very solid, together with the ringer it weighs close to 50 pounds.
Included with the bell is a beautiful Viloco-Chicago Ringer.
It is a horizontal piston ringer. The piston moves freely and produces a lovely tone when it strikes the bell. It is air powered (pneumatic). It is marked BR-83.
