London North Eastern Railway is the rail passenger franchise which provides long distance rail services over the East Coast Main Line from London Kings Cross to Yorkshire, Lincs and Humberside, the North East and Scotland, using Class 91/MkIV electric and HST diesel trainsets at a maximum speed of 125mph.
It commenced operation on 24 June 2018 and replaced the Virgin Trains East Coast franchise owned by Stagecoach (90%) and Virgin Trains (10%) which commenced operation in 2015. Originally intended to run until 2023 and return 3.3 billion to the government in the form of franchise premiums, due to the line performing below VTEC’s expectations, the government announced in May 2018 that the contract would be terminated early with the operation transferred to a government owned operator of last resort, London North Eastern Railway.
The Government plans to retender the Intercity East Coast operation as a “Partnership” with Network Rail in 2020.This item comprises a fold out A8 leaflet which opens out to give a double sided A4 sheet with information on LNER and its historic antecedants – see photos.
