c.1885, Portland, ME, 1885. Scarce viewbook of western North Carolina, along or near the lines of the Richmond & Danville RR. Original gilt-stamped green/’black cloth, worn at extremities, spine loose, pages detached. 12 pages of photo-engravings depicting scenery and life in the deep South. Includes farm scenes, street views in towns (including Hickory and Asheville, NC) and other interesting sights. Particularly striking is the last image, of a black youth riding a high-wheel bicycle. In this condition it will be valuable only for the illustrations, though it is possible a paper conservator could do some minor restoration. This is reflected in the price.
