Background: Once the War was under way the military got priority on both scheduling entire trains and seating on regularly scheduled passenger trains.  Trains were the major mode of travel for distances in the 1940s.  In 1943 my Mom went from Connecticut to Fort Belvoir to see my Uncle get commissioned a 2nd Lieutenant, and my Dad’s only leave saw him cross the country from San Diego to Connecticut and back in 1945.  He was home on leave for VE Day. (He road a troop train which was an interesting experience, and took a train cross country back East upon his discharge after deciding not to settle in California.) My grandparents took a train from Connecticut to Florida’s McDill Army Air Field in 1943 for the birth of their first grandchild. My aunt took a train from Connecticut to San Francisco in early 1945 to try and reconcile her War time marriage to an Army Airman.
